Lost Particles of Light: Celebrating the Life & Art of Fred Bacher

May 14, 2016 @ 4:00 pmMay 15, 2016 @ 12:00 am EDT

Canadian-born writer, performer, media artist, musician, and teacher Fred Bacher (1957–2014) spent much of his adult life and artistic career in Buffalo. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he was responsible for more than 20 solo and group multimedia performances staged at Squeaky Wheel, Hallwalls, and other venues in the U.S. and Canada, along with film and video pieces screened internationally and fiction and journalism published throughout North America.

His live work, often presented under the stage name “Fritz Bacher,” combined wordplay-rich writing, original music, political commentary, and film/video footage. In addition to work on a graphic novel and 35mm feature film, he released an album of original songs, Major Statement Man (2002). Bacher’s talent was recognized with multiple grants and fellowships from such organizations as the NEA, NYSCA, NYFA, the Canada Council, and the Ontario Arts Council.

Lost Particles of Light (a title derived from his 1988 short story “An American in Paris,” published in Hallwalls’ anthology of fiction and performance texts, Blatant Artifice) is intended as both a richly deserved look back at Bacher’s life and art by many of his artist friends/collaborators and an introduction for a new generation to one of the most memorable and creative characters Buffalo’s vibrant media and literary scene ever nurtured. The event will feature documentation of his performances (including the notorious Gulf War-era multi-character play Vomit), screenings of some of his video works, readings of his texts, new performances of songs from Major Statement Man, and sure-to-be-outrageous reminiscences by those who new him best (presented live, in text form, and on video).

The lineup for this special event—organized in conjunction with Squeaky Wheel’s 30th anniversary—is still being put together (and audience members will be invited to tell their own stories as well), but confirmed presenters include Alan Bigelow, Elizabeth Licata, Edmund Cardoni, Tony Billoni, Richard Wicka, Laura McGough, Marten Clibbens, John Bacher, Julia Dzwonkoski, Chris Hill, Dana Ranke, and Todd Lesmeister. Media artist Ron Ehmke, a frequent collaborator of Bacher’s, will host. (Newcomers to Fred’s world, be warned: In keeping with the spirit of a man who once titled one of his pieces “I Can’t Shut Up” and who often pushed any time limit for group shows, this event WILL RUN A VERY LONG TIME.)
