Squeaky Wheel is proud to announce it’s Fall | Winter exhibition and screening series. From cybernetic futures to voyages across space and time, this thematic series focuses on alternative science fictions, including experimental films, rare docs, cult classics, and is anchored by an exhibition of work by Kathy High. Featuring a number of works from 1924 to the present and several guest artists, curators, and speakers.

Artists: Peggy Ahwesh, Max Almy, Reyner Banham, Scott Bartlett, Frances Bodomo, Willy Braque, Ira Cohen, Kathy High, Chema García Ibarra, Molly Palmer, Michael Robinson, and Doris Wishman.

Opening the fall series OTHERWORLDS, this program of shorts is united by earthly follies and a desire to conquer the stars. A portrait of worldly madness, galactic tedium, and the ambitions and failures of the 20th Century emerge. Featuring Peggy Ahwesh’s Heaven’s Gate (2000), Max Almy’s Leaving the 20th Century (1987), Frances Bodomo’s Afronauts (2014), Chema García Ibarra’s Protoparticles (2011), Michael Robinson’s Victory Over the Sun (2007), and the 1924 Soviet Animation Interplanetary Revolution. Curated by Ekrem Serdar.

SOFT FICTION: Science Fictions by Kathy High (Opening)

An interdisciplinary artist working in the areas of technology, science, speculative fiction and art, Kathy High and her work have been infused with the paranoia and possibilities inherent in science fiction. Coinciding with our sci-fi screening series, OTHERWORLDS, Soft Science variously explores the fear of cloning, prospects for animal research, and other futures with a queer and feminist line of inquiry.

REYNER BANHAM LOVES LOS ANGELES (Screening)

The 1972 documentary of British professor and author Reyner Banham’s discovery and investigation of a strange land called… Los Angeles. With introductory remarks by Austin-based programmer, author, and VHS publisher Joe Ziemba of Bleeding Skull!

Consisting of both contemporary works investigating new technologies and underground films from the era of head-trip pyschedelia, NOT OF THIS EARTH is a screening of artists’ moving image works depicting alternate realities, cosmic landscapes, and humanoid beings.

NUDE ON THE MOON (Screening)

Sexploitation Queen Doris Wishman’s 1961 nudie-cutie classic, of a rich scientist who organizes an expidition to the moon, and discovers that it’s full of nude women. Introduced by legendary filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh!
