SUMMARY:Digital Art and Technology Access Summer 2024
DESCRIPTION:DATA is a media arts and technology program designed for neurodivergent individuals (such as individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder\, ADHD\, dyslexia\, dyspraxia\, etc.) ages 13-19. A series of year-round workshops builds creative and social skills. Students learn a range of media-based practices to suit all interests in technology and art.\nIn DATA we provide a minimum 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio\, noise-canceling headphones\, snacks or lunch\, and a separate sensory-friendly space outside the classroom for breaks. The lead Teaching Artists have experience in working with students with disabilities. The Teaching Assistant has a degree in social work and experience working with students with disabilities\, and can help you begin the process of applying for services through the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Our Peer Mentor is a neurodivergent student or recent graduate from a digital media art degree program. \nDATA is tuition free and space is limited.\n\n2024 Summer Program – Application Now Open! \n\nJuly 15 – 26 (2 weeks)\nMonday – Friday\n9am-1pm\nBuffalo State University\nBuckham Hall\, room 141\n  \nThis summer we are thrilled to have media artist and educator Jenson Leonard as our instructor! We will use a range of digital tools for drawing\, animation\, and photo editing to create gifs\, memes\, animations\, websites\, and more. Students will have the option of incorporating projects they are already working on\, or starting with fresh ideas.  \n  \nScroll down to “tickets” to apply.  If this is your first time applying to DATA\, you will receive a phone call from Caroline\, our Education Director\, to discuss the program in greater detail\, and to ensure that we are a good fit for each other. We unfortunately aren’t able to support individuals with high one-on-one needs. \nQuestions? Please email caroline@squeaky.org\, or call 716-884-7172. \n\n  \nDATA is made possible by the generous support of The Children’s Guild Foundation.

Do you love making things\, and experimenting with new ideas\, new software\, and new equipment? Do you already have some experience with media art? (Including but not limited to video\, animation\, digital illustration\, sound editing\, creative coding\, game design\, digital photography\, etc etc!) Do you want to spend your Saturday afternoons working on exciting new projects\, meeting other teen artists\, and working with amazing guest artists and mentors? Then Saturday Cafe might be the place for you! \n\nApply by October 8\, 11:59 pm\n  \nFall 2023 dates:\nOctober 7 – December 16 (no class Nov 25)\nSaturdays 1:30-4:30 pm\n  \n\nThe October 7 class will be an info session for new applicants.\nWe will also attend the Next Gen youth screening of the Buffalo International Film Festival.\nAll interested applicants are strongly encouraged to join us Oct 7\, 1:30-4:30!\nEmail caroline@squeaky.org to confirm your attendance!\n  \nDaily bus passes available\nFREE to participate\nStipends for completing the program!\nField Trips!\nFinal screening at the Burchfield Penney Art Center!\n  \n  \nIn addition to working on a range of smaller media art projects and building new skills\, this year’s Saturday Cafe participants will work on a longer term project called Stepping Into Your Light. For this project\, students from both Saturday Cafe and Just Buffalo Literary Center will work in response to the work of Buffalo-based artist Julia Bottoms\, whose work is on view at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Bottoms uses portraiture to express the nuance and complexities of Black identity beyond limiting\, reductive stereotypes. She has also been selected to fabricate a sculpture of Shirley Chisholm. As the first Black woman to be elected to Congress in 1968\, and the first Black woman to run for President of the United States\, Chisholm’s life and legacy are rooted in carving a place for her voice to be heard and to advocate for her community. \nThrough sessions at the Burchfield Penney and at Squeaky Wheel\, students will be inspired to imagine what it means to dream beyond imposed societal limitations\, and to define how they see themselves in history on their own terms. Through creative writing and multimedia video\, students are encouraged to consider how they find their voice\, to think through how the visual arts can be a catalyst for more expansive and meaningful representation. \n  \nApply online at this link.\nClick here for more info about Saturday Cafe\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Skill Share - Live Coding with SuperCollider
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 10th \n2pm-5pm \n \nJoin us for this Skill Share with Pittsburgh based musician Matt Wellins. Wellins will introduce participants to the open source and free software SuperCollider. \nSuperCollider is an object-oriented programming language designed for real-time audio applications\, such as algorithmic composition\, live performance\, and acoustic research. As it enters its 22nd year in existence\, SuperCollider uniquely thrives in its strong\, supportive internet community and the deep reserve of user-designed resources. Its built-in library gives users instant access to probabilistic forms of organization\, unique oscillators and filters\, and machine listening. \nIn this workshop\, we will discuss and illustrate several examples of “live coding” – a way of engaging with software in a performative way or as a useful tool for sound-making at home. Students will leave with a comprehensive introduction to the environment\, able to begin tackling their own projects\, circumventing SuperCollider’s somewhat challenging learning curve. \nNo prior knowledge of code is necessary\, though some experience with electronic music is suggested. \nSeats are limited register today!\n  \nCheck out these other events Matt Wellins will be doing during his visit here in Buffalo:\nTalk: Objects and Electronics\nThursday\, March 8\, 2018\nTime: 12:15-1:15pm\nCiminelli Concert Hall – Rockwell Hall\, 3rd Floor\n[ Buffalo State College\, Music Department\, 1300 Elmwood Ave\, Buffalo NY 14222 ]\nFree admission \nLive Performance: Matt Wellins @ The Cass Project\nSaturday\, March 10\, 2018\nTime: 7-9pm\nThe Cass Project\, in the Boiler Room\, Myrtle & Hamburg\n[500 Seneca St\, Buffalo\, NY 14204]\nAdmission: $10-20 Sliding Scale \n  \nMore information can be found at http://thecassproject.org/events/ \n \nThis workshop is offered in collaboration with The Cass Project \n For information contact kevin@squeaky.org.
