The Imprisonment of Martin Sostre\n30 minutes\, 16mm on digital video\, 1974 \nExamining the case of Martin Sostre\, a black Puerto Rican bookstore owner in Buffalo\, New York who was framed on drug possession charges in 1967 and sentenced to prison\, this film shows how the American justice system can be abused for purposes of political repression.\n \n \nTalk | Justice for Geraldine and Martin Campaign\, with Geraldine Robinson\, James Coughlin\, and Brandon Schlia \nThe Justice for Geraldine and Martin Campaign has been working intensively for years to clear the names of both Martin Sostre\, and Geraldine Robinson who was arrested with Martin Sostre in 1967. We’ll be joined by Geraldine (Pointer) Robinson\, who will be accompanied by James Coughlin and artist Brandon Schlia who will present a brief documentary on the work of the campaign. Donations for the campain will be accepted during the event\, and books our friends at from Burning Books will be available. \n“On the night of July 14\, 1967\, Geraldine Pointer (then Robinson) was helping Martin Sostre close the Afro-Asian Bookshop on Jefferson Avenue. The two met and started dating the previous year\, soon after he opened the city’s first Black revolutionary bookstore. Sostre eventually opened two more stores\, including the East-West Bookshop which Pointer managed. In the early morning of July 15th\, plainclothes police and FBI agents raided the store on Jefferson and arrested the two\, scapegoating Sostre as the cause of the city’s recent uprising. \nGeraldine Robinson became one of the first Black women political prisoners of the Black Power era\, yet her struggle remains virtually unknown today. Any dedication to the excavation and dissemination of Martin Sostre’s legacy must also acknowledge the importance of Geraldine’s struggle and the enduring impact of state repression on her and her family.” – Read more at the Martin Sostre Insititute and sign the campaign here. \n \nJohn Akomfrah\, Seven Songs for Malcolm X\n52 minutes\, 16mm on digital video\, 1993\n \nAn homage to the inspirational African-American civil rights leader\, Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies\, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life\, legacy\, loves\, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm’s widow Betty Shabazz\, Spike Lee\, and many other\, Seven Songs looks for the meaning behind the resurgence of interest in the man whose X always stood for the unknown. The film will be introduced by Donte McFadden. \n“What makes Seven Songs so provocative is that Akomfrah shows respect for many different interpretations of Malcolm\, suggesting that this revolutionary figure belongs to everybody.”—The Chicago Reader \n“Seven Songs for Malcolm X combines riveting footage of the man himself\, extracts from his writing\, recollections of his family\, friends and fellow activists\, with [brief] staged tableaux. It’s all here: Malcolm X’s charisma\, the struggle to clarify his beliefs\, and the context in which they evolved… an engrossing portrait.”—Geoff Ellis\, Time Out (London) \nMenu\n \nThe menu prepared and selected by artist and chef Kevin Thurston will include glutenfree and vegan options\, including: \n\nTurkey meatballs\, cinnamon scented tomato sauce (gf)\nRoasted vegetable platter (v/gf)\nMuhamara and pita (v)\nDolmades (v/gf)\nBarrel+Brine pickles (gf)\nSelected treats from Arabic Sweets\n\n </p>\n<h4>Biographies of the artists\, filmmakers\, and chef</h4>\n<p> \nDonte McFadden\, PhD\, is a leader\, educator and mentor. Annual rates start at just $30 – sign up here. \nFilms\n \nTomonari Nishikawa\, sound of a million insects\, light of a thousand stars\n2 minutes\, 35 mm on digital video\, Japan/USA\, 2014 \nI buried a 100-foot 35mm negative film under fallen leaves alongside a country road\, which was about 25 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station\, from the sunset of June 24\, 2014\, to the sunrise of the following day. The night was beautiful with a starry sky\, and numerous summer insects were singing loud. The area was once an evacuation zone\, but now people live there after the removal of the contaminated soil. – Tomonari Nishikawa \nThis project is made possible with funds from the Media Arts Assistance Fund\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts\, Electronic Media and Film\, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; administered by Wave Farm. \n \nArwa Aburawa and Turab Shah\, And still\, it remains\n28 mins\, 4K Video\, Algeria/UK\, 2023 \nAnd still\, it remains is a new film by Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah which carries forward their long-term dedication to exploring race and environmental legacies of colonialism. In this work\, they examine the ongoing impact of French toxic colonialism in Mertoutek\, a village nestled in the Hoggar Mountains of Algeria’s Southern Sahara and a home to the Escamaran community of Black Algerians. Used as a testing ground for nuclear bombs by the French between 1961 and 1966\, the area continues to suffer the consequences of radioactive fallout circulating in the water and soil. \nThe film examines Mertoutek’s encounter with French nuclear colonialism without restricting the region’s history to a narrow colonial temporality. Juxtaposed with slow meditative shots of the mountains\, Escamaran ways of life and ancient rock art\, experiences of French nuclear experiments\, faith and spirituality are narrated by the voices of multiple residents. Summoning the landscape as a witness and protagonist\, And still\, it remains reflects on the deep inscription of colonial violence into the landscape’s body and ecology. It also pushes against forms of visual capture that reproduce a colonial gaze while challenging visibility as the currency for political redress. Winds migrating across the Sahara have recently carried sand containing nuclear remains from the Algerian Sahara back to France\, serving as a reminder that the environmental afterlives of colonialism cannot be contained or forgotten. \nBy focussing on the experiences of Mertoutek residents\, Aburawa and Shah throw into sharp relief the racial oversight in the ‘end of the world’ discourse by asking what worlds have already ended and what does a life after the end of the world look like? What does intimacy with toxic colonialism afford its survivors and how does it shape their ideas around justice? How does one recover from ongoing violence and how\, ultimately\, do you carry on? \n \nDoom Town\n18 min\, Dunning 3D process presented on anaglyphic 3D\, USA\, 1953\nDirected by Allan Milner. Screenplay by Gerald Schnitzer. Produced by Lee Savin. 2003 recreation by Peter Kuran and Greg Kintz. \nThe first 3-D documentary\, Doom Town was made by independent producer Lee Savin\, who was intrigued by the atomic-bomb tests at Yucca Flats in Nevada. Filming began March 17\, 1953. Photographed with the Dunning Three-Dimensional Process\, it captured the devastating effects of an atomic blast. \nDoom Town was written by screenwriter-director-author Gerald Schnitzer\, whose credits included scripts for Bela Lugosi (The Corpse Vanishes\, Bowery at Midnight) and The Bowery Boys. Schnitzer also created several acclaimed TV commercials for Kodak (“Kodak Moment”)\, Chevrolet\, and Clairol. \nDoom Town was sneak-previewed on April 30 at the Paramount Theaterin Hollywood and opened ni Los Angeles on July 2 with The Maze and Lippert’s 3-D short\, College Capers. The next day it opened at the Telenews theaters ni San Francisco and Oakland. After these bookings\, it was mysteriously pulled from circulation. Although the project was approved by proper channels\, the anti-atomic testing stance was hardly a message the government wanted to promote. Was Doom Town suppressed? Nobody seems to know but the movie disappeared without a trace in July 1953. \nIt was lost for decades until the negatives\, slated to be junked\, were discovered and salvaged by the 3-D Film Archive in 1985. The separate reel with the color atomic bomb shots was missing; a recreation was done in 2003 by Peter Kuran\, using actual 3D- atomic bomb footage. The original “multi-sound” has been recreated by Greg Kintz. \nYears ahead of its time\, Doom Town is a prescient social statement and an excellent example of 3-D filmmaking. – Ted Okuda\, 3-D Rarities\, Blu-Ray published by Flicker Alley\, 2015 \nArtist talk with Elizabeth Tannie Lewin with Dana Murray Tyrrell\n \nVisiting artist Elizabeth Tannie Lewin will be speaking with Dana Murray Tyrrell about her work in our exhibition Radiation Borders\, and which names the first episode of Bit Depth: Nuclear Set. Nuclear Set interweaves Jorge Luis Borges’s Library of Babel\, poetry by Maquis\, Rene Char\, the journals of Italian Futurist\, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti\, historical footage of the United States’ nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands\, and a 3D video game landscape of Bikini Atoll to speculate a future that will survive our extinction. This artist talk reunites the two artists who were both part of Squeaky Wheel’s Workspace Residency program in 2018\, and both of whom have significantly investigated the legacies of nuclear toxicity and harm in their work. \nPerformance by Katie Weissman\n \nKatie Weissman began playing the cello at the age of three at Buffalo Suzuki Strings after seeing Yo-Yo Ma appear on Sesame Street and holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from Boston University. SUMMARY:Deniz Tortum's September 1955 and Floodplain
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 11\, 6–8 pm and Saturday\, November 12\, 2022\, 3–5 pm\nFree or suggested donation\nReserve a viewing time here or show up!\nSqueaky Wheel invites you to a special event for you to experience two virtual reality experience by Deniz Tortum\, September 1955 and Floodplain. We are excited to welcome back Tortum\, who was a Workspace Resident researching virtual reality documentary practices in 2017\, in conjunction with his virtual reality intensive taking place that weekend.  Viewers can sign up at the link above to reserve a viewing time for September 1955. \n \nDeniz Tortum\, Floodplain (2018). A wide image taken outdoors on a partially sunny day. A dirt road\, plastic chairs\, and some houses are visible. Someone is sitting on a chair\, their back turned against us. On the left\, a minaret is visible.\nDeniz Tortum\, Floodplain\nVirtual reality on Oculus Rift\, 15 min\, 2018 \nA mysterious tree watches over a forest while humans traverse its paths\, planning construction zones and searching for a lost person. As civilization slowly unravels\, quiet new dynamics emerge. \nFloodplain is set against a man-made environmental crisis and explores our relationships to each other at the end of nature. If we can no longer be what we were\, can we really become something new? Can we be a forest\, or a stone; can we be a multitude of organisms; can we be nothing? Can we be something that we don’t know we can be yet? \n \nDeniz Tortum\, September 1955 (2016). A sun dappled room with a cabinet full of photography film. Two pictures are hanging on the wall; one of a person with a camera\, the other of a soccer team lined up. A coat and fedora hang in the corner by a comfortable chair.\nDeniz Tortum with Çağrı Hakkı Zaman & Nil Tuzcu\, September 1955\nVirtual Reality on Vive\, 8 min\, 2016 \nThe 8-minute virtual-reality documentary depicts the Istanbul Pogrom\, a government-initiated organized attack on the minorities of Istanbul that took place on September 6-7\, 1955. This interactive installation places the viewer in a reconstructed photography studio in the midst of the pogrom\, allowing one to witness the events from the perspective of a local shop-owner. \nDrawing on the photographic archive of Maryam Şahinyan (1911-1996) and Osep Minasoğlu (1929-2013)\, Armenian photographers who lived in Istanbul at the time\, the installation materializes an extinct space. The wall in the virtual studio that exhibits Sahinyan’s photos is transformed into a documentation of the raids and their aftermath in the physical space; by overlapping the layouts of the two spaces the project experiments with the transition from a virtual to physical experience. The experience of the space induced by participating in the mundane activities of the photography studio aims to generate unique historical narratives that are reproduced and enacted by the viewer. \nBiography of the artist \nDeniz Tortum works in film and immersive media. His work has screened internationally\, including at the Venice Film Festival\, SxSW\, IFFR\, IDFA\, Sheffield Doc/Fest\, Hot Docs\, True/False and Dokufest. His latest short Our Ark (2021\, co-dir Kathryn Hamilton) has premiered at IDFA 2021 and won Best Short Film award at Istanbul Film Festival. His latest feature film Phases of Matter (2020) premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2020 and received the Best Documentary awards at Istanbul and Antalya Film Festivals. He has worked as a researcher at the MIT Open Documentary Lab and MIT Transmedia Storytelling Initiative\, where his research focused on immersive media. In 2019\, he was featured in Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. \nThis event is presented in partnership with ASI and the Arts Council for Wyoming County\, and made possible with funds from the NYSCA in Partnership with Wave Farm: Immersive Art & Technology Initiative\, with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Special thank you to Çağrı Hakkı Zaman. \nBanner image: Deniz Tortum\, Floodplain (2018).

SUMMARY:Love & Sex Show: Sweet Nothings
DESCRIPTION:Special Event | Friday\, February 14\, 7–10 pm\n$7 General\, $5 Members\, free for ArtsAccess Pass holders\nAges 18+ only. Please review our community guidelines.  \nSqueaky Wheel’s annual Valentine’s day event celebrating intimacy and sexuality returns with a special auditory edition. Listen to headphones filled with ASMR and other tracks by artists Erin Gee and Hope Mora; create a live soundtrack to a new film by Caroline Doherty; sing along to karaoke films by Michael Robinson\, and Wayne Yung\, and enjoy a performance by lyricist and hip hop artist Desiree Kee\, and much more! \nProgram\n7–8 pm: Listen to artist made audio tracks by Hope Mora and Erin Gee on remote headphones\, and sing your heart out with karaoke! \n8 pm: Come together in the microcinema to watch\, listen\, sing\, and vocalize to films by Caroline Doherty\, Dina Georgis and Sharlene Bamboat\, Jess Dobkin\, Lauren Fournier\, Michael Robinson\, Thirza Curthand\, and Wayne Yung! \n9 pm: Gather in the gallery to listen to a performance by lyricist Desiree Kee\, followed by more karaoke! \nAudio Works\nChannel 1\nErin Gee\, of the soone\, 18:39 min\, digital sound\, 2019\nErin Gee leads the listener in a first-person roleplay as a specialist of a new experimental neural treatment: language processing and deprocessing. After a brief testing of equipment and EEG monitoring\, Gee reads out the processes of a long-short term memory algorithm as it “learns” language from the classic book of passions gone awry\, “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë. This exposure to machined-evolution of linguistic patterns is intended to reset or recalibrate human linguistic patterns in your brain\, offering a form of abstracted\, deep tissue neural “massage”. \nChannel 2\nHope Mora\, Sex With Harmony\, 1:48 min; Basic Need With Dajah\, sound\, 1:21 min; My Neck My Back\, Bell Hooks Love\, and Magic Booty\, 5:03 min\, digital sound\, all 2020 \nScreening program\nThirza Curthand\, Helpless Maiden Makes An “I” Statement\, 6 min\, digital video\, 1999\nBy using clips of evil queens/witches this video plays off the sadomasochistic lesboerotic subtexts commonly found in children’s entertainment. A helpless maiden is tiring of her consensual s/m relationship with her lover\, and “evil” queen. She wants to break up. An impassioned monologue in a dungeon with our heroine in wrist cuffs quickly becomes an emotionally messy ending in flames. This video was inspired by the artist’s own childhood “kiddie porn”\, Disney movies which turned her on to no end and kicked off many a prepubescent masturbation session. \nLauren Fournier\, Sex and Death\, 4 min\, digital video\, 2015\nThe performer re-frames the Freudian tension between eros and thanatos using the feminist tradition of performance for video. She repeats the locution “sex and death and sex and death and sex and death” aloud as she shimmies across the screen. The formal integrity of the loop meets the failures of the body\, as the performer playfully moves across the screen\, trying to catch her breath to continue the spell-like invocation. Sex and death— the drive toward binding (eros) and the drive toward destruction (thanatos)— are configured by Freud to be the two fundamental drives behind Western civilization. In this video\, the Freudian tension is taken up through a floundering\, vaguely sexual performance. The function of humour is something which has been increasingly (re)claimed by Canadian feminist video and performance artists in recent years\, and is something that I find both politically efficacious and formally refreshing. \nJess Dobkin\, It’s Not Easy Being Green\, 3 min\, digital video\, 2011\nA heartfelt and provocative rendition of Kermit the Frog’s melancholic It’s Not Easy Being Green\, where the artist\, in the role of Kermit the Frog\, is fisted by a woman in drag in the role of Jim Henson. Together\, as human puppet and puppeteer\, they lip sync the much loved song. This film is a for-camera version of a performance previously presented to live audiences. For mature audiences. \nDina Georgis and Sharlene Bamboat\, In Queer Corners\, 6 min\, digital video\, 2013\nIn Queer Corners is a collaborative video by Dina Georgis and Sharlene Bamboat. The video examines the ways in which archives harbour stories\, those that are spoken\, and those left unsaid. Based on serendipitous encounters\, and employing the language of dreams and desire\, Georgis and Bamboat narrate each other’s stories and address the complications of queer re-tellings. In Queer Corners explores the limits and possibilities of the archive through the theme of narration and storytelling. Working with a found object from the dusty and neglected corners of the Canadian Lesbian & Gay Archive\, this work explores how archival objects can come to life through their encounter with the present\, with other desires\, and with unexpected responses and meanings.\nThe archive\, if left unexamined\, works authoritatively to construct and stabilize knowledge. Though it selects and gathers signs unconsciously\, what is held within its walls is neither arbitrary nor innocent. In resistance to interpret archival objects into a synchronized story of the past\, In Queer Corners looks to its archival object as an affective placeholder from which new meanings and new stories can be made. The narratives recorded in this work respond to the found image in narrative accounts where the line between dream and reality is distorted. They speak a non-literal truth about desire\, insecurity\, despair\, sex\, race and class\, and the difficulty of uttering and representing these very things. Knowledge itself is vulnerable\, made in relation\, and articulated in broken stories. Reaching for some thing or some place\, the bodies represented tell unfinished narratives. Though the bodies stand alone\, the line between self and other is obfuscated and they depend on each other to tell their stories. \nWayne Yung\, One Night in Heaven\, 5 min\, digital video\, 1995\nIn this queer Asian spoof of karaoke\, a new boy in town discovers the dark side of the big city. The story follows his adventures to an underground club where sex and murder are in store. \nCaroline Doherty\, Rock\, Soft Place\, ~5 min\, digital video\, 2020 \nMichael Robinson\, Hold Me Now\, 5 min\, digital video\, 2008\nPlagued by blindness\, sloth\, and devotion\, a troubled scene from Little House On The Prairie offers itself up to karaoke exorcism. \n \n \nDesiree Kee \n \nDina Georgis and Sharlene Bamboat\, In Queer Corners (2013) \nBios of the artists \nCaroline Doherty is an artist based in Buffalo\, NY. She employs multiple mediums\, including performance\, video\, sculpture\, and public projects. She has participated in residencies including the Squeaky Wheel Workspace Residency in Buffalo; the SOMA Summer Program in Mexico City; Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology in Michoacán\, Mexico; and ArtPark in Lewiston\, NY. Her work has been exhibited throughout North America\, in Europe\, and in China. Caroline has been an educator for over 15 years\, facilitating art making for youth\, university students\, and adults in formal and informal settings in the US\, Mexico\, and Canada. \nDesiree Kee is a 25 year old lyricist that was born and raised Queens\, Ny. She moved from NYC to Maryland in 2002 and later relocated to Buffalo\, NY in 2011. She currently has two projects available on her soundcloud which is I AM NOT A RAPPER EP (2017) and This Mixtape Is A Cry For Help (2019) as well as 4 self-directed visuals which can be found on her youtube. \nHope Mora is a visual artist from West Texas\, currently teaching and completing her MFA at The University at Buffalo and holds a BFA from Texas State University in San Marcos. She has shown work in selected gallery and public space exhibitions in Central Texas and Western New York\, such as Mexic-Arte Museum\, Public Art San Antonio\, Anna Kaplan Contemporary\, and The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art. \nThe Love & Sex Show: Sweet Nothings is sponsored by City Wine Merchants and SE2 Silent Disco. \nBanner image: Wayne Yung\, One Night in Heaven (1995).

SUMMARY:Futurism Now: Limitless Hope through Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Futurism Now: Limitless Hope through Speculative Fiction\nBlack Magnolias x Black Quantum Futurism\nSaturday\, February 9\, 2019\, 2–5pm\nFree and open to the public\n \nWhat if your future dreams for society became the dominant narrative for hope in the present? How do we imagine a more liberated future for ourselves? This discussion group and creative workshop led by Black Magnolias will use speculative fiction–Afrofuturism\, science fiction and fantasy–as a tool to create new worlds of hope and change. Participants will be engaged in using ideas of limitless technology\, fantasy\, and science to rewrite the world and walk away with a sci-fi story that replaces negative narratives with possibility and power. \nResponding to a newly commissioned essay by Rasheedah Phillips written for the exhibition by Black Quantum Futurism\, this three hour workshop will be accompanied by presentations\, short films\, and free coffee. Pens and writing materials will be provided. \nInitiated by Marielle Smith and Richmond Wills\, Black Magnolias was created as a creative space to share\, build and develop a strong community of writers of color. This transient workshop series responds to a need for space for Black & Brown\, Queer and LGBT+ writers of all platforms and extend the invitation to those that belong to this community. This event is open to participants ages 14 and up. \nMarielle Smtih is a Buffalo native and mother of two\, who enjoys writing and performing poetry\, essays\, and folklore that are reflective of her life experience and ancestry as a queer Black person. Marielle has been organizing with Just Resisting since 2016\, a people of color community organization that focuses on social justice. She believes one of the greatest acts of resistance is finding healing through artistic expression. She currently co- facilitates Black Magnolias\, a Black and people of color creative writing workshop with Richie Willis. \nRichmond Wills (He/Him) is a poet\, storyteller and cultural organizer currently based in Buffalo New York. He co-founded Black Magnolias\, an ongoing creative workshop series targeting black/brown inner-city populations. He also coordinated outreach for Words on the Street\, an initiative to make literary arts more accessible to disenfranchised communities. From being a social justice activist with Black Love Resist in the Rust\, a not for profit grassroots organization currently involved in a lawsuit against the city of Buffalo over illegal checkpoints to being a sexual health advocate and tour de force for youth who identify as LGBT+\, Richmond hopes to mobilize and grow with Black & Brown communities to work towards collective solidarity and liberation. \nThis event is presented as part of the public programming accompanying Black Quantum Futurism: ON THE EDGE OF THE BUSH / A LONG WALK INTO THE UNKNOWN\, on view at Squeaky Wheel\, Jan 25–April 20\, 2019. \nBanner image by Richmond Wills.

DESCRIPTION:POTHOLES/BACHES: An Evening in the Swamp\nSaturday\, December 15\, 2018\n7–10pm\nFree and open to the public \nJoin us for an interactive program that celebrates the end of the residency and the continuity of the Swamp. We begin with POTHOLES/BACHES\, a conversation between Buffalo’s East Side and Puerto Rico’s Panoramic Route that explores the possibilities between collective memory and history through film\, karaoke and participatory storytelling. This is followed by reflection\, communion\, and dancing\, as we usher the Swamp’s transition out of the physical space of Squeaky and into the lived experience of the community. – The North is a Lie \npothole: a depression or hollow in a road surface caused by wear or subsidence; a pond in a deep natural underground cavity\nbache: pequeño desnivel en el suelo o en el pavimento\, producido por la pérdida o hundimiento de la capa superficial; \nA disruption in the man-made design\, development or progress of something\nDisminución o interrupción pasajera en el progreso o desarrollo de algo \nA natural\, hidden\, sacred space\nUn lugar natural sagrado\, escondido \nA reliquary\nUn Relicario \nthere is no such thing / no hay tal cosa\nas empty property / como una propiedad vacía\nabandoned buildings / un edificio abandonado \nor vacant land / o una tierra vacante \ndrive-by relics / reliquias de paso\nthat sit in silence / que se sientan en silencio\nthunder with noise / son relámpagos\nfew choose to hear / que pocos decidieron oír \nwhat is built on the land / lo que se construyó \ndefines how we live / nos define \nbut it does not own the / pero no es dueño(a)\nstories of who we are / de nuestras historias \nThrough a swamp dream / a través de este sueño de pantano\nof present-past / de presente-pasado\nwe will fill the silence / llenamos el silencio\nof what was with the / de lo que fue \nsounds of what lives on / con el sonido de lo que es \nthrough conversation / conversando\nsong and dance / cantando y bailando \n////////// \nOn December 15\, The North is a Lie invites our friends\, families and community into the Swamp to explore the transcendent possibilities of solidarity and existence within our collective imagination\, as we meditate on space\, memory\, and identity. \nWe ask that those attending bring something special from a place that’s defined you\, but no longer exists in this current space and time. SUMMARY:Silo City Reading Series (with Mary Helena Clark)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 3\, 2017\n 7pm\n @ Silo City \nSqueaky Wheel co-presents an edition of Just Buffalo’s signature summer reading series with a special screening by artist Mary Helena Clark. Clark will be journeying to Buffalo to present her hypnotic\, uncanny 20 minute film Delphi Falls\, which recently had its premiere at the 2017 Whitney Biennial\, and which Clark worked on during her Workspace residency at Squeaky Wheel in 2016. Join us at Silo City as we welcome back the artist for a night of dreamy music\, poetry\, and film\, including Aidan Ryan\, Cages\, and Colorado-based poet and operator of the Dream Delivery Service\, Mathias Svalina. \nMary Helena Clark is an artist working in film\, video\, and installation. Her work uses the language of collage\, often bringing together disparate subjects and styles that suggest an exterior logic or code\, to explore dissociative states through cinema. Clark’s films have screened at the 2017 Whitney Biennial (New York)\, the Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus)\, Grazer Kunstverein (Graz\, Austria)\, Anthology Film Archives (New York)\, Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago)\, National Gallery of Art (Washington DC)\, the Swedish Film Institute (Stockholm)\, and at the International Film Festival Rotterdam\, the New York Film Festival\, the Toronto International Film Festival\, BFI London Film Festival\, the Hong Kong International Film Festival\, and BAMcinématek\, among others. She has curated film programs at Altman Siegel (San Francisco)\, The Nightingale (Chicago)\, and Bridget Donahue (New York).

SUMMARY:[Noo Phone in the Black Space]: or How to Avoid Roaming Charges
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 25 + Friday\, May 26\n7pm\n@ Silo City\nFree and open to the general public \nSqueaky Wheel is proud to present an augmented reality performance by Buffalo based media artist Yvette Granata and San Jose based artist and performer Andrew Blanton. For two consecutive evenings the artists will install and perform in a visual\, sonic performance that transforms the grand halls of Silo City through emerging technologies. \nCan augmented reality be used as the creation of new forms of collectivity? Or does it produce new forms of spatio-temporal apartheids? Through their respective approaches to performative augmentation and mobile media\, Andrew Blanton and Yvette Granata’s works inquire into the manner in which augmented reality and media performance can be framed as a critical dialogue between the alliances and the vacuoles of mobile realities. \nInterpreting augmented reality as performance space\, their works are audiovisual performances and variations on collective and un-collective space. The works form a critical dialogue on augmented life\, collecting performances of sound and image — an ambient group text message\, a vertical disorientation through camera-apps\, a hand-held sonic immersion\, and a modulation of ambient feedback of the Silos.
